Definition of aspect ratio

aspect ratio
1.  The physical length of the vertical axis divided by that of the horizontal axis, ratio between the width of the picture and the height of the picture. Letterbox format has an aspect ratio of 16:9.

Aspect ratios are mathematically expressed as x:y (pronounced "x-to-y") and x/y (pronounced "x-by-y").
