Definition of leased lines

leased lines
1.  Occurs when a customer has ordered a private line from the phone company, directly connecting two locations. (Similar to a closed circuit). Fax machines must be programmed specifically for this (usually soft switches or dip switch). If programmed for leased line, these machines will not work in conventional situation: typical symptom is similar to main board problem; dial tone disappears when machine is turned on.
